Rob Draper Q&A

Flying the flag for creativity in Worcestershire, Rob Draper is an artist and designer specialising in hand lettering for branding and identity, editorial, large scale works, retail and apparel clients. Having worked with the likes of Nike, Samsung, Levi’s, Golden Globes and many more, we spoke to Rob about how innovation is key to the ever-changing landscape of his industry.

Find out more below.

1. Tell us a little bit about your career so far.

After a company buy-out and relocation bought me unexpected redundancy from my ‘dream job’, I felt I was at a junction – I could retrain and leave behind a 20+ year design career or go it alone, not turn anything down, try new things and see what happens. That approach left me starting a clothing brand, working in a high security prison, lecturing in graphic design and spending my spare time drawing on coffee cups.

2. What is the innovation behind your work?

Creativity, passion, trying to look at alternative directions and aiming to bring that and inject it into the projects I work on, both commercially and personally.

3. What does this mean for Worcestershire?

My industry has changed so much over the years it is almost unrecognisable from what it was and that has meant it’s easier than ever to now work across the world, but Worcestershire is always where I come back to, it's my base and my home.

Worcestershire has given me a base to work globally for some of the clients of my dreams, truly embracing creativity, innovation and personality.

4. What knowledge has been gained from your work?

The knowledge that creativity can be an essential, unique, distinctive tool whether used commercially across brands or personally across my own work.

5. What does the word “innovation” mean to you?

Everything. It is what drives me, the challenge of exploring new boundaries through creativity and personality. It’s about pushing ideas, concepts and projects as far as they can possibly go and enjoying all the new discoveries this process brings about.
